What is Womb Steaming?
Womb steaming is the traditional practice of exposing the pelvis and perineum to steam and the healing properties of medicinal plants. With no single country or culture of origin, historical records and folk practice point to the universal use of womb steaming on every inhabited continent. Primary uses of womb steaming include postpartum healing, relief of congested and painful periods, and fertility support. However, the Peristeam Hydrotherapy Institute actively collects case studies and documented research to expand the therapeutic use of womb steaming to include support of cyst and fibroid shrinkage, relief of recurring infections, easing menopausal and post-hysterectomy discomfort, preparing girls for menarche (first period), recovering from painful sex and sexual trauma, and improving cervical health.
Is there any evidence that womb steaming works?
Although vaginal steaming (also known as womb steaming, yoni steaming, or pelvic steaming) has not been extensively studied by medical science, there is growing evidence to suggest that it may be a beneficial practice for certain gynecological conditions. The widespread prevalence of vaginal steaming in ancient medical texts and indigenous medical practices (predating the current Sims-era gynecological system that focuses primarily on surgery and pharmaceuticals) is promising and should be further explored.
Within the past two decades, there have been a handful of studies exploring the impact of vaginal steaming on gynecology and, so far, all of the results have been favorable. Topics studied include vaginal steaming for postpartum recovery, chlamydia, genital infection, vaginal atrophy, menstrual pain, irregular vaginal discharge, vaginitis, high risk HPV, cervical cancer and yeast infections.
